Transportation
Metro(subway map) Click here for Shanghai Subway Map
The city’s metro lines are definitely the best way to get around in Shanghai. They are efficient, cheap, clean and extremely easy to use and locate. Currently there are 4 metro lines, and many more are planned with the Shanghai Expo looming in 2010.
Line 1 loops around the Huaihai Rd. area, Line 2 goes along Nanjing Rd. to Pudong. These two lines connect at the impressive Peoples Square.
Taxi
Shanghai has around 80,000 taxi drivers and over 41,000 taxis. Taxis are reasonably cheap, starting at 11RMB, equivalent to 1.2 USD / 0.80 Pounds Sterling. The various taxi companies are easily recognizable by their unique colors. The ones which are often considered the best in Shanghai are Dazhong (turquoise-colored taxis; this company also has a special fleet of 50 or so Mercedes taxis which go at the same rate as the normal ones), Qiangsheng (yellow-colored taxis), and lastly, Jinjiang (white-colored taxis).
However, it is now becoming harder and harder to catch a taxi during rush hour, and when there is a rainy day one is lucky to get a taxi at all.
Climate
In Shanghai the four different seasons are very clearly defined, and the climate here swings between the two extremes of hot and cold.
In winter, temperatures can drop well below freezing, with a blanket of chilling drizzle. The coldest months of the year are often January and February.
Shanghai summers are both very hot and extremely humid. Temperatures are almost always in the high 30s and sometimes the thermometer records a temperature of over 40 degrees Celsius (end of June, throughout July, August, and the beginning of September).
The Shanghai rainy months are May, September and October.
Banks and ATMs
It would be sensible to have an RMB account with a local bank. Four of the largest banks in China include:
- The bank of China
- Industrial and Commercial Bank of China
- The Bank of Communications
- The Agricultural Bank of China.
Banks are open throughout the week and most operate on the weekend as well. Banks close in the early evening.
ATM machines can be found almost everywhere in Shanghai and are linked to Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, and Cirrus networks.
There is a limit as to how much you can withdraw daily, usually 5,000RMB.
Maids (Ayis)
Most foreign expats who are living in China hire maids, or in Chinese, Ayis. An Ayi cleans, cooks, washes and irons clothes and babysits; some may also pay bills on your behalf.
Ayis can be hired through Ayi employment agencies; however, the best way to find a suitable one is by word of mouth, recommendations from friends, other expat families, colleagues at work or local friends.
Many supermarkets have notice boards that help advertise maid agencies and also help cater to other needs that a family new to Shanghai may find helpful.
IC, IP phone services and mobile phone services
Quite simply, you can dial international calls anywhere in Shanghai. Long distance calls can be made from hotel rooms; however, you have to pay a surcharge of 30%, with a three minute minimum
\Internet Phone Cards (IP cards). An IP card functions like a prepaid phone card; however, it connects via the internet. The card can be used with any phone. It has a special number and a pin, both found on the card (instructions will then be given in English as well as Mandarin). The biggest advantage of using an IP card is that it saves you a lot of money. The usual cost of an IP card is 30-45 RMB to buy a card of face value 100RMB. The charge per minute to most countries is only 30% of the regular phone line service charge. IP cards are available almost everywhere and come in denominations of 50, 100, 200 and 500 RMB.
However, one word of caution: IP cards come in many different kinds, with different rates for phoning different countries, so make sure that you get the one you need.
Tips for Mobile phone users
Here are a few useful tips:
You can get mobile phone services either from China Telecom or China Unicom.
Remember that China Telecom numbers begin with 135, 136, 137, 138 and 139. China Unicom numbers begin with 130, 131, and 133. Be sure to ask about being able to send text messages overseas.
You have a choice between using the quanqiutong network, which requires that users register and pay a monthly fee, or using prepaid SIM cards.
Use a prepaid card if you use your phone for less than 250 minutes a month, since this will help you to save money. However, if you plan to use your phone more than that, then signing up for an account would be a better option.
China Telecom has recently launched an incentive for account holders that applies different rates depending on the minutes accrued. Thus, if you need to use your phone for long hours, the new scheme may help you a lot in terms of cost.
Email and Broadband (ADSL) Internet Services
It has become very common and popular for people in Shanghai to communicate and do business by email and via different websites through Broadband (ADSL) Internet services.
People in Shanghai have good access to the Internet through fixed phone dialup services or Broadband (ADSL). Please note that dialup service is extremely slow and can also be quite expensive.
Broadband (ADSL) has become quite common in Shanghai. Depending on the package you get, the installation fee normally starts at 310 RMB and the monthly fee starts from 130 RMB.
Local and International Courier Services
Most major tourist hotels and business centers have mailing services where you can send mail and small packages.
Major local and foreign courier companies in Shanghai are as follows:
Express Mail Service (EMS) (Tel. 185)
DHL (Tel. 6536 2900 / 800-810 8000)
TNT Skypak (Tel. 6419 0000 / 6419 3794)
